What You Need to Know About...

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Chronic Bronchitis or Emphysema)

COPD results in difficulty of breathing, and if not addressed, can get worse over time. Common symptoms of COPD are the following:

  •   Cough

  •   Coughing of mucus

  •   Wheezing

  •   Shortness of breath

  •   Tightness of chest

  •   Other breathing related symptoms

COPD can be caused by many different reasons, but cigarette smoking is the leading cause. Other causes of COPD are long-term exposure to other lung irritants—such as air pollution, chemical fumes, or dusts.

Lung Nodules/Pulmonary Nodules

Countless pulmonary nodules are discovered each year during chest X-rays or CT scans.

  • Most nodules are noncancerous (benign).

  • A solitary pulmonary nodule is found on up to 0.2% of all chest X-rays films.

  • Lung nodules can be found on up to half of all lung CT scans.

  • Risk factors for malignant pulmonary nodules include a history of smoking and older age.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a common condition in the United States. It can occur when the upper airway becomes blocked repeatedly during sleep, reducing or completely stopping airflow. This is known as obstructive sleep apnea. If the brain does not send the signals needed to breathe, the condition may be called central sleep apnea.

  • Healthcare providers use sleep studies to diagnose sleep apnea.

  • They record the number of episodes of slow or stopped breathing and the number of central sleep apnea events detected in an hour.

  • They also determine whether oxygen levels in the blood are lower during these events.

  • Breathing devices such as continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) machines and lifestyle changes are common sleep apnea treatments.

  • Undiagnosed or untreated sleep apnea can lead to serious complications such as heart attack, glaucoma, diabetes, cancer, and cognitive and behavioral disorders.

What is Pulmonary Medicine?

Pulmonary medicine is the subspecialty of internal medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and management of disorders of the respiratory system, including the lungs, upper airways, thoracic cavity, and chest wall. Although most common respiratory problems are treated by general internists and other specialty physicians, internists practicing pulmonary medicine (often referred to as “pulmonologists”) are frequently called upon to help diagnose unknown disorders and assist in managing difficult, unusual, or complicated diseases of the respiratory system.

Pulmonologists have expertise in structural, inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic disorders of the lung parenchyma, pleura and airways, pulmonary vascular disease and its effect on the cardiovascular system, and detection and prevention of occupational and environmental causes of lung disease.
